
The apex garment makers’ body in Bangladesh, the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), has sought faster port delivery and customs clearance to overcome the adversity caused by the COVID-19 pandemic even as the newly elected office bearers of the trade body from the port city of Chittagong called for this assistance during two separate courtesy visits to the Commissioner of Chittagong Customs House and the Chairman of the Chittagong Port Authority on 5 May (Wednesday).
Media reports maintained this adding that the BGMEA delegation was led by the First Vice-President of the organisation, Syed Nazrul Islam.
The BGMEA delegation during its meeting with the above-mentioned authorities, reportedly, underlined that the readymade garments industry is trying to turnaround after the backlash of the coronavirus pandemic even as thanking the Chittagong Port Authority and the Chittagong Customs House the BGMEA First Vice-President, reportedly, maintained that these two organisations stood by businesses in the pandemic.

Shahjahan, who is the Chairman of the Chittagong Port Authority, on his part maintained that the readymade garment industry is the backbone of Bangladesh’s economy and hence, despite the limitations, the port authority will try to speed up their operations so that businesses can avoid losses.
