Bangladesh’s garment industry, which is the country’s primary export industry, is struggling in the present global economic downturn as a result of a number of infrastructure issues, including both local and foreign difficulties. To get out of this mess, the administration needs everyone’s assistance.
This was said at a meeting with Rear Admiral S.M. Moniruzzaman, the recently appointed Chairman of the Chattogram Port Authority, by Syed Nazrul Islam, First Vice President of the Garment Manufacturers Association (BGMEA).
Syed Nazrul Islam said, “Garment industry, the economic backbone of the country, has set a goal of exporting US $ 100 billion by 2030. We all need to work together to meet this challenge. In this case, considering the future, increasing the capacity of the port, speeding up the activities of the bay-terminal, including adequate handling equipment and infrastructural development should be given importance.”
Rakibul Alam Chowdhury, Vice-President of BGMEA, said, “Readymade garments is a completely time-bound industry. There is a risk of serious financial loss to the concerned industry if fails to export within the specified lead time.”
After listening to the BGMEA leaders, the Chairman of the Port Authority assured them of cooperation. Rear Admiral SM Moniruzzaman said, “In the economic progress of Bangladesh, the garment industry is the backbone of the country’s economy. Therefore, to continue the trend of garment export growth, Chattogram Port Authority will try to carry out import-export related activities quickly despite various limitations.”
At the same time, to increase the capacity of the port, he wanted the sincere cooperation of BGMEA, concerned stakeholders and all quarters in the speedy implementation of various plans for infrastructural development.
