In a recent development which could increase the garment sector’s woes further, the technical evaluation committee of Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) recently placed at a public hearing its recommendations for increasing bulk power price by 20 per cent and transmission charge by 7 per cent.
This is going to have a severe repercussion on the industry, feel industry insiders.
The Chairman of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association’s standing committee on power Anwar Hossain Chowdhury said that fresh power price hike would increase their production cost further while underlining that over 30,000 garment workers became jobless recently after 69 factories closed down this year due to rising production cost.
“Power price hike would cause many more garment factories to close down thereby paving the way for social unrest,” opined Anwar.
Further, energy experts, businessmen and the consumers’ representative have also warned the BERC of probable social unrest if power price was raised as it would coincide with an unstable commodity market, where prices of many essential items have jumped significantly of late.
