
In 2022, Bangladesh’s apparel exports to the European Union (EU) surged significantly, achieving an impressive 22.20 per cent market share. In contrast, China, the country’s top competitor, witnessed a decline in its market share, dropping to 29.24 per cent, according to the latest data from Eurostat, the statistical agency of the European Commission.
In the previous year, Bangladesh emerged as the second-largest apparel exporter to the EU, with apparel exports worth US $ 22.89 billion, demonstrating remarkable year-on-year growth of 35.69 per cent. In comparison, China’s apparel exports to the EU stood at US $ 30.15 billion, reflecting a growth rate of 17.01 per cent.
In 2021, Bangladesh’s market share in the apparel industry accounted for 19.80 per cent, totalling US $ 16.87 billion, while China dominated with a 30.22 per cent share, amounting to US $ 30.22 billion.
Faruque Hassan, the president of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), expressed his contentment with the noteworthy rise in apparel exports to Europe.
He emphasised Europe’s significance as a major apparel importer globally and particularly for Bangladesh.
Hassan highlighted Bangladesh’s apparel imports to the EU grew at a CAGR of 9.42 per cent, outpacing the EU’s average growth rate of 4.31 per cent from other countries, showcasing its competitive edge. EU’s 2022 apparel imports surged to US $ 103.09 billion, a 20.97 per cent Y-o-Y increase.
