Nine textile mills in Bangladesh, which were run by the workers and employees, have failed to perform well due to alleged irregularities by the labour leaders, who are on the boards of these mills.
Media reports maintained this adding, under a denationalisation scheme, Awami League-led Governments, reportedly, handed over the management of these nine mills to their Board of Directors, comprising employees and permanent workers of the mills even if management of the eight mills was, reportedly, transferred on 21 March 2001, while the ninth one was handed over on 2 November 2010.
Reports further added that before handing over the mills, the Government had in 2000, formulated guidelines on transferring the ownership of the mills to their workers and employees even if according to the Government data, the objective of this move (handing over the management to the Board of Directors, comprising employees and permanent workers of the mills) was to increase the production of local yarn and generate employment.
