
With an objective to achieve smooth and competitive trade market in near future following the transition from a least developed country (LDC) to a developing nation, Bangladesh is all set to sign free trade agreements (FTAs) with as many as 11 countries soon, claimed media reports.
The Executive Chairman of Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA), Sirajul Islam, during a media interaction, underlined that the Commerce Ministry would be starting trade negotiations with different countries including Bhutan and Nepal and expressed hopes that Bangladesh would successfully sign FTAs with some countries soon.
With reference to the same, Commerce Secretary Md. Jafar Uddin reportedly underlined that Bangladesh is in negotiations with 11 countries to sign FTAs or preferential trade agreements (PTAs).
The Commerce Secretary further added that Bangladesh was also under the process of signing Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreements (CEPA) – CEPA not only covers duty, but also investment, logistics, services and other important issues – with India separately.
