Sheikh Hasina, the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, has advocated for at least a six-year extension of preferential market access for graduating LDCs like Bangladesh.
Media reports claimed this adding the Prime Minister proposed this while placing a five-point recommendation before the development partners at an event — the event, titled ‘Global Partnership for Smooth and Sustainable Graduation: Marching Towards Smart Bangladesh’, was held at Qatar National Convention Centre (QNCC) — on the sidelines of LDC5 conference held in Doha.
It may be mentioned here Bangladesh is due to transition from the Least Developed Countries (LDC) category soon even as it would reflect Bangladesh’s economic strength and resilience to financial and climate shocks while also highlighting the extent of the country’s economic and social progress but at the same time, the country will have to deal with certain drawbacks in terms of benefits that that it is currently enjoying as an LDC.
