Unifi, a manufacturer of synthetic and recycled yarns, is introducing Repreve using Ciclo’s biodegradable technology, which allows synthetics to decompose organically.
Brands may now use the new Repreve with Ciclo offering, which was unveiled at the Functional Fabrics Fair, as a sustainable substitute for virgin materials in their manufacturing processes worldwide. Both nylon and filament and staple polyester can be used with the unique method.
Parkdale Advanced Materials and Intrinsic Textiles Group formed a joint venture, Intrinsic Advanced Materials, with which the Repreve with Ciclo technology was developed.
According to Unifi CEO Eddie Ingle, the partnership with Intrinsic Advanced Materials tackles the global problem of synthetic microfiber shedding by offering a globally accessible solution that mills, brands, and retailers can now incorporate to lessen microplastic fibre contamination.
Cheryl Smyre, VP of Parkdale Advanced Materials, stated that the industry must work together to address the issue of synthetic textiles being a significant contributor to microplastic fibre contamination. Repreve and Ciclo, two potent solutions, are combined in this collaborative effort to assist optimise recycled content and tackle microfiber contamination at its source.
By allowing synthetic fibres to spontaneously biodegrade when exposed to moisture and microorganisms for an extended period of time, Repreve with Ciclo technology drastically shortens the amount of time synthetic fibres (microplastics) are left in the environment. Today, a number of eco-friendly brands, like Target, Bass Pro Shops, Billabong, and Champion, provide items that include Ciclo.
The Ciclo additive can be used to make any of Unifi’s Repreve-branded products, such as Repreve Takeback and Repreve Our Ocean.
