A tragic incident at a garment factory in Gazipur’s Sreepur upazila has sparked violent protests and clashes, resulting in injuries to at least 20 workers and 11 police personnel.
The disturbance started on Tuesday night when Jakir Hossain, an employee of Jinnat Knitwear Limited in Nayanpur Notun Bazar, jumped to his death from the roof of the business. Jakir reportedly asked for leave earlier that day but was turned down by plant officials who allegedly harassed him. Around nine o’clock at night, doctors at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital confirmed his death.
Distressed by the incident and the way they felt management was treating them, the workers refused to return to work the next morning and congregated in front of the plant to demonstrate. The demonstrators’ attempts to damage the property caused the situation to worsen. Police and demonstrators engaged in violent altercations after authorities stepped in to manage the throng. To disperse the restless workers, law enforcement used sound grenades, tear gas shells and baton charges.
According to Sreepur police station officer-in-charge Muhammad Abdul Barik, “At least 20 workers and 11 police personnel were injured during the clashes.” In the midst of the disturbance, he said, the police took action to restore order.
Superintendent of Police at Gazipur Industrial Police-2, AKM Zahirul Islam, confirmed that while the situation remains tense, it is now under control. He also mentioned that a substantial deployment of law enforcement, including army personnel, industrial police, and local police, has been stationed in the area to maintain peace.
