Tannery workers in Bangladesh have sought a minimum wage of Taka 25,000.
This is as per reports, which claimed, Tannery Workers Union, which is an association of tannery workers, has demanded the same even as they also sought job security.
Addressing a consultation meeting with the journalists in Dhaka recently, Tannery Workers Union President Abul Kalam Azad reportedly underlined even though the Government, after the consultation with the tannery owners had formed a wage board nearly five years ago but its recommendations were yet to be executed.
Abul Kalam Azad further reportedly expressed grave concern that recommendations of the 2018 wage board, which had fixed tannery workers’ minimum wages at Taka 13,000, were not appropriately implemented while also adding tannery workers, in general, were facing a tough time after the tanneries were shifted from Hazaribag to Savar.
He also reportedly underlined Bangladesh leather industry was facing a threat due to lack of proper strategic plan even as he advocated ensuring social compliance and initiating pragmatic steps to regain its lost image of the country’s leather industry.
