
At two different demonstrations on Friday in Dhaka, leaders of the textile Workers’ Trade Union Centre and the Garments Sramik Front sought that those responsible for the worker deaths in the recent student protests for quota reform and textile worker movements for wage increases face justice.
In addition, they called for a free trade union among clothing manufacturers.
The Garment Workers’ Trade Union Centre staged a demonstration in front of the National Press Club, with Mantu Ghosh, the organisation’s president, serving as the event’s chair.
Mantu Ghosh urged the interim administration to proceed towards putting the murderers of textile workers to trial for their crimes in 2023, during both the worker and student movements for higher salaries and against discrimination.
He also called on the interim government to take steps to increase the wages of the garment workers and ensure trade union rights of the workers in the garment factories.
Vice-president of the organisation Joly Talukder demanded the withdrawal of the cases filed against the workers during the movements of the workers in 2023.
General secretary of the organisation Sadequr Rahman Shamim, adviser Abdullah Kafee Ratan, central leaders Jiaul Kabir Khokan, Monzur Moin, among others, spoke at the rally, which was followed by a protest procession that paraded different city roads.
A gathering was also conducted by the Garment Stalin Front in front of the National Press Club, with the demand that the workers’ killers be put on trial.
Ahsan Habib Bulbul, the front’s president, urged the temporary administration to implement a rationing scheme for garment workers, through which they could purchase necessities at reduced costs.
General Secretary of the organisation Selim Mahmud, labour leader Kazi Ruhul Amin, central leader of the organisation Khalequzzaman Lipon, among others, spoke at the rally, which was also followed by a protest procession that paraded different city roads.
