In response to imminent EU legislation mandating the collection and sorting of textile waste by 2025, ReHubs Europe has launched a groundbreaking initiative aimed at recycling 2.5 million tonnes of textile waste by 2030. This ambitious undertaking necessitates the implementation of up to 250 industrial projects across Europe, each focusing on different aspects of fiber-to-fiber recycling.
ReHubs is a joint initiative by EURATEX (European Apparel and Textile Confederation) to upcycle textile waste and circular materials all over Europe.
Its primary mission is to foster collaboration among key stakeholders in the textile value chain, including textile manufacturers, fashion brands, collectors, recyclers, chemical industry representatives, and technology providers. This collaborative effort is crucial to significantly increasing the textile industry’s recycling capacity and meeting the regulatory requirements set by the EU.
The organisation’s establishment follows three years of meticulous preparation, including the release of a comprehensive Techno-Economic Study assessing the feasibility of scaling up textile waste recycling in Europe. This study delved into the business case, cost implications, and environmental benefits of textile recycling.
Leading the charge as the executive director of ReHubs Europe is Chris Deloof, a seasoned professional with extensive experience in the textile sector. Deloof expressed his enthusiasm for the role, stating, “I consider it a privilege to work alongside the captains of industry and fashion that are joining ReHubs Europe, building tomorrow’s circular textile industry together.”
Alberto Paccanelli, president of Euratex, lauded the initiative, emphasising the industry’s commitment to advancing toward a new circular business model despite challenges. He stated, “This initiative proves that we are committed to taking our industry forward towards a new circular business model, even during today’s difficult times. I am particularly happy to see all segments of our textile value chain joining forces.”
ReHubs Europe’s headquarters will be situated in Brussels, working closely in partnership with Euratex. The initiative welcomes membership from companies interested in investing in textile waste recycling in Europe. This proactive approach not only aligns with upcoming EU regulations but also marks a significant step toward a more sustainable future for the textile industry.
