Even as garment workers’ protest continues in Bangladesh, apparel exporters feel outsiders are taking advantage.
Reports underlined this while adding Shafiul Islam Mohiuddin, a former President of the BGMEA has pointed out that the wage board is typically formed every five years and raised concerns that certain local and foreign groups might be seeking to exploit its establishment before the upcoming elections.
He emphasised that the ongoing unrest could potentially lead to many garment owners losing their businesses and facing challenges in repaying their loans.
SM Mannan Kochi, the Senior Vice-President of the BGMEA, alleged that external entities are involved in the burning and vandalizing of factories.
AK Azad, the Managing Director of Hameem Group, expressed frustration, stating, “We have provided law enforcement agencies with video footage showing our employees being attacked inside the factory, but no action has been taken as of yet.”
He further disclosed that four of his factories in Ashulia had to be closed, and continuing operations during the ongoing unrest has proven to be exceedingly challenging.
