The government of Bangladesh is considering introduction of a new law for mandatory energy auditing by industries, residential and commercial buildings starting from 2016 to ensure efficient use and conservation of energy. The ministry of power, energy and mineral resources (MPEMR) has already drafted the proposed law titled ‘Energy Efficiency and Conservation Rule,’ reported a leading Bangladeshi daily. The deadline set for the textile and RMG sector to carry out energy auditing voluntarily before compulsion is 2015 and 2017 respectively, under the proposed rule. Under the existing infrastructure, energy efficiency and conservation can save around 2,640 megawatts (MW) of electricity, over one-third of the country’s daily electricity production, a study carried out by the MPEMR revealed. The government has already trained 99 energy auditors for the execution of the proposed law, revealed Siddique Zobair, Joint Secretary, Power Division under the MPEMR.
