On Monday, garment workers in Chittagong organised protests, blocking several roads to demand payment of their overdue wages.
Workers from Anwara Dress Makers Limited and Frank Apparels Limited gathered at the Bayezid Bostami Polytechnic intersection around noon, leading to significant traffic disruptions in the area. Reports indicate that employees of Anwara Dress Makers Limited have not received their salaries for the past three months. The protest began with a small group of workers in the morning, but tensions intensified when some workers received only half of their December salary at noon, prompting employees from Frank Apparels Limited to join in solidarity.
Protesters expressed frustration over their employers’ ongoing struggles to pay wages regularly, with many claiming they had not received any salaries for the last three months. The workers have vowed to continue their blockade until they receive their full wages and allowances.
Law enforcement, including members of the army, Industrial Area Police, and officers from Khulshi Police Station, have been deployed to manage the situation and are currently in negotiations with the protesters. However, no representatives from the factory owners have appeared at the scene.
CMP Deputy Commissioner (North) Muhammad Faisal Ahmed confirmed the protest, stating that authorities are working to resolve the issue through discussions with the affected workers.
