Faruque Hassan, the President of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), announced that the Government is expected to unveil the new minimum wage for garment workers by November, and BGMEA member factories will implement it by December.
Therefore, any unrest or movements by workers before the wage announcement lack a logical basis.
Faruque made this statement during a press conference addressing recent worker unrest and the minimum wage issue in the garment sector.
The press conference took place at the BGMEA Building in Uttara, Dhaka.
He expressed optimism that the Minimum Wage Board will announce the updated pay structure by November, and the entire garment industry, represented by entrepreneurs, will accept the Government’s declared salary structure, regardless of the challenges it may present to the industry.
The implementation of the new wage structure is anticipated to begin in December.
Faruque emphasised that the industry is fully aware of the difficulties faced by its workers, including rising living costs and the impact of recent international economic changes.
He expressed sympathy for the hardships experienced by both entrepreneurs and workers, emphasising the vital role that workers play in the garment industry’s success.
