Several economic analysts in Afghanistan have urged the Government to rebuild the textile factories in the country.
The Afghanistan Chamber of Commerce and Industries (ACCI) officials recently said that despite a huge potential to have its own textile industry, Afghanistan annually imports textiles and apparels worth US $ 500 million from countries like India, China, Pakistan, Korea, Iran and Turkey.
“There is currently no textile production in Afghanistan and all the raw materials are imported from other countries, which is worrying.” – Jan Alokozai, Deputy Head, Afghanistan Chamber of Commerce and Industries
The economic experts and analysts opined that the Government should invest significantly to renovate all its textile factories so as to minimise the nation’s reliance on other countries for fabrics.
Reportedly, all imported garments and textiles are sold at higher cost in local markets; and what makes matters worse is that poor financial condition of the people hugely impacts the apparel and textile business in the country.
Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani had recently inaugurated a US $ 7 million cotton-processing plant in an industrial park in Herat province.
