
The Melbourne Cup, the annual Group 1 Thoroughbred horse race hosted in Melbourne, Australia, has significantly bolstered the country’s retail sector with a noteworthy contribution of US $ 52 million. In 2022, attendees at the Melbourne Cup in Victoria splurged US $ 34.1 million on fashion-related purchases, encompassing a total of 232,870 fashion items. This sum includes 37,855 hats or fascinators, 31,578 dresses, and 14,532 suits. The Melbourne Cup, which commenced on 7th November this year, is already making waves with a more robust economic impact and increased engagement.
A study conducted by the market research firm IER revealed that the Melbourne Cup Carnival has made a major contribution of over US $ 3.6 billion in gross economic impact to Victoria over the past decade. This figure surpasses the Australian Open’s reported impact for the same period by almost US $ 1 billion.
IER’s research indicates that each attendee at the 2022 Carnival generated a substantial US $ 2,781 in gross economic impact, marking a nearly 10 per cent increase from 2019.
Neil Wilson, Chairman of the Victoria Racing Club (VRC), expressed that the Melbourne Cup Carnival has commenced the year 2023 with stronger metrics. He stated that the economic stimulus generated by Cup Week extends beyond any other annual sporting event in Australia. “Various sectors, including retail, accommodations, fashion, hospitality, and entertainment, reap the rewards of Australia’s original major event. It retains its position as the foremost economic driver in Australian sports.” He added.
The initiation of the Melbourne Cup signals the start of Australia’s most significant economic uplift event. Retailers are diligently working to bolster their sales in ahead of the festive season, aiming to recover from the challenges they have faced over the past few months.
