Manufacturing in US is not the best business proposition in general. Dov Charney, the ousted Founder of American Apparel, who claims to have made Downtown L.A. ‘cool’ is now set to find cheaper lands for his second sprint as he explores setting up his own apparel business. The location zeroed on is South of the 10 Freeway. “The problem is, I can’t go back there. I can’t afford it. The next place I intend to make cool is South of the 10 Freeway, right on the banks of downtown,” averred Charney in a piece that appeared on Bloomberg.
Charney is still continuing to look for sites for a factory, few miles from American Apparel’s manufacturing hub. Much like with that earlier facility, he plans to be a pioneer in another burgeoning part of the city.

Charney, who has already been fired from American Apparel and lost a legal battle to buy AA out of bankruptcy, makes confident claims. “I am the guy who created a bare-bones wholesale T-shirt maker and grew it into a company with US $600 million in sales and almost 300 stores around the world at its peak,” he is quoted in the interview. Counting on his vision, Charney revealed that the factory will ensure that its operators are paid well – above minimum wage – and possibly be part owners of the company. The new entity will push for workers’ rights and higher pay. The product category chosen has American-made basics like T-shirts and underwear. Speaking about the financing he has only unveiled that it will be ‘interesting’.
