The government has announced its intention to amend the labour law by October this year to better protect workers’ rights and align with international standards set by the International Labour Organization (ILO). A progress report on these amendments is scheduled to be submitted by November.
Brigadier General (Retd) Md. Sakhawat Hossain, Adviser to the Ministry of Labor, Employment and Shipping, made the announcement during the Green Factory Award-2025 ceremony held at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in Dhaka on 24th June. Speaking as the chief guest, he emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring compliance with ILO requirements.
Hossain also expressed concerns about the misuse of leadership positions within business organizations such as BGMEA and FBCCI by some industrial owners for personal gain. He stated that such actions have led to the neglect of workers’ rights and noted that some industrialists have leveraged their positions to become members of parliament or ministers, without adequately protecting worker interests.
The adviser highlighted that these issues have resulted in international pressure on Bangladesh in labour forums. To address these challenges, the government aims to implement necessary reforms by October and prepare a comprehensive report by November.
Adilur Rahman Khan, Adviser to the Ministry of Industries and Housing and Public Works, was present as the special guest at the event.
