Telangana Minister for IT and Industries, D. Sridhar Babu, on Tuesday, 9th September, invited apparel makers from Coimbatore and Tirupur to establish garment units in Telangana, citing the state’s world-class infrastructure and availability of long-staple cotton.
During his visit to the textile hub of Tamil Nadu, the Minister said that Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities in Telangana were well-equipped to host apparel and textile industries. He highlighted that abundant long-staple cotton provided an advantage for high-quality garment production. He also urged industry leaders from Tirupur to participate in an upcoming roundtable conference to be chaired by Minister for Agriculture and Textiles Tummala Nageswara Rao.
The Minister’s office stated that following consultations with stakeholders, Telangana’s new textiles policy would be finalised. The Minister also pointed out that the recent 50% tariffs imposed by the United States had disrupted exports, making it a critical time for the apparel sector to explore alternative strategies and investment destinations.
Recognising Tirupur’s status as the “Knitwear Capital of India”, he noted its nearly 10,000 garment units that employ lakhs of people and produce around 90% of India’s cotton-based exports, including casual wear, sportswear, socks and caps. He added that the city had been exporting garments of international standards since the 1990s.
As part of his visit, Sridhar Babu met Hero Fashion Group (Ramraj Cottons) chairman K.R. Nagarajan and managing director Sundaramurthy, encouraging them to consider investments in Telangana. He also held discussions with South India Mills Association (SIMA) secretary-general K. Selvaraj, highlighting Telangana’s industry-friendly policies and ease of doing business.
The Minister further met with Tirupur Exporters’ Association chairman A. Saktivel, president K.M. Subramanian and other industry representatives, assuring them that the State government would extend all necessary support to investors. He also visited the Netaji Apparel Park in Tirupur, accompanied by Telangana State Industrial Infrastructure Corporation managing director Shashank, the Minister’s office said.
