
NIFT-TEA College of Knitwear Fashion and Ministry of Rural Development have joined hands to train unskilled youth in the apparel industry under DDU-GKY (Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Grameen Kaushalya Yojana). C M N Muruganandan, Chairman, NIFT-TEA and Anil Subramaniam, Director (Skills), DDU-GKY recently signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in New Delhi, India on Thursday.
Under the DDU-GKY scheme, 5,000 youths will get training over the next two years.
As per the terms of the agreement, NIFT-TEA should be able to provide placement to at least 40 per cent of the trained youth with a starting salary of Rs. 8,000. The Government will also create a placement Management Information System (MIS) to keep a record of the career graph of candidates for up to four years.
“The DDU-GKY scheme will help industrial players in getting skilled labourers. Also, it would enable Government to generate employment among rural youths. The training would a give them a chance of getting skilled rather than improving over years from being unskilled,” said T R Vijay Kumar, General Secretary, Tirupur Exporters Association (TEA).
Candidates from operator-level to mid-level management will be trained at Institute’s Centre for Apparel Training (CAT). Training will be given in various disciplines such as merchandiser, sewing machine operator, quality control executive, advanced pattern making, garment cutter, sampling tailor, inline checker, fashion designer and production supervisor.
CAT has a record of training more than 15,000 unskilled labourers without charging any fee in last two years. About 80 per cent of them is now employed at garment factories.
