A commercial textile park has been proposed on a 15,503.60-square-metre plot on Subhash Road in Nagpur, with an estimated project cost of around Rs 1,226 crore. The multi-storey complex, planned opposite Geeta Mandir, is proposed as a dedicated hub for textile trade, manufacturing, warehousing and allied commercial activities.
According to reports, the project will have a carpet area of around 7.898 lakh square feet and comprise 672 units, including shops, manufacturing units, warehouses and offices.
Located in central Nagpur, the development is expected to provide access to textile traders, small entrepreneurs and manufacturers from Nagpur, Vidarbha and the wider Central India region. The project is also estimated to generate a profit of around Rs 175 crore for the Nagpur Housing and Area Development Board.
The proposal comes against Nagpur’s long-standing association with the textile trade and aims to bring textile-related commercial and manufacturing activities under one roof.
However, the project has received a mixed response from textile traders and retailers in the city. While some have welcomed the central location and concentration of textile businesses, others have raised concerns about the size of the proposed units and the viability of a multi-storey textile complex.
Traders have also questioned whether customers, traditionally accustomed to easily accessible ground-level establishments, would visit upper floors for cloth purchases. They cited the closure of several malls in Nagpur as an indication of the challenges faced by multi-storey retail destinations.
The project’s response will largely depend on customer footfall and its ability to attract traders and shoppers once operational.
