Over fifty factories have been closed indefinitely amid ongoing worker demonstrations in the apparel industry, and many more are closing every day.
According to the interim Government, 15–20 per cent of apparel orders placed by international customers have been cancelled.
The numbers were revealed by Labour Adviser Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain during a press conference held in Dhaka after the advisory council meeting.
He said, “We are seeing businessmen of some specific countries lobbying hard to secure orders. We have also been dealing with various issues, including recent discontent in Gazipur and Ashulia due to wage payment problems at a major company.”
To somewhat allay the unrest, the Government stepped in and Finance Advisor Salehuddin Ahmed arranged a Taka 7.9 billion loan to alleviate wage concerns for about 40,000 workers.
Following the Awami League Government’s overthrow on 5th August, there was a period of lengthy labour unrest in several industries, including the apparel sector.
Different factories have different requirements from their garment workers, which causes major disruptions.
Asif said a review committee, including labour leaders and legal experts, has been formed to address the issues. He urged workers to bring their grievances to the committee for resolution.
The secretary of labour and employment said that foreign plots could be the cause of the turmoil, pointing out that certain international companies are actively seeking orders. He emphasized that workers suffer the most damage as a result of attacks on factories.
The administration is still dedicated to responding to legitimate labour demands and outside pressures, promising swift action to bring peace back and address problems hurting the apparel industry.
