
Due to the theft of apparel items on highways being transported to ports for shipping, reportedly continuing in Bangladesh, the apex garment makers’ body in the country has called upon the Home Minister to take necessary steps to help prevent the same.
According to media reports, the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) made this appeal when the BGMEA Senior Vice President SM Mannan (Kochi) called on Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan in person, at a meeting, along with BGMEA Vice President Md Nasir Uddin.
Underlining that such incidents cause huge financial losses while also putting the exporters concerned in embarrassing situations before the global buyers, not to mention the tarnishing of the country’s image, the BGMEA leaders urged Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan to direct the Highway Police to step up patrolling on highways to ensure safe movements of vehicles carrying apparel goods from factories to the Chittagong Airport.
The BGMEA leaders also urged the minister to make the process of filing cases of incidents of theft easier for RMG exporters.
The BGMEA VP, SM Mannan, asked the minister to help quicken then CCTV installation on the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway, adding that this would assist in getting the road security improved, thereby preventing thieves from stealing.
BGMEA leaders were assured by Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan thet the issues are being addressed by the ministry.
