USA has slumped 60 per cent in its apparel import values in May ’20, according to OTEXA.
The country imported US $ 2.65 billion worth of apparels in May ’20 as against US $ 6.66 billion in the same month of the prior year.
While on M-o-M basis, USA’s import values have fallen by 22.29 per cent in May over April this year. The total import value of apparels in April was US $ 3.41 billion.
In volume-terms, the USA tumbled by 58 per cent on Y-o-Y basis and the import stood at 950.54 million SME. Unit prices of the USA import declined to US $ 2.79 per SME in May ’20 as against US $ 2.92 per SME in May ’19, shrinking by 4.45 per cent on Y-o-Y basis.
China’s apparel shipment to the USA declined substantially by 60 per cent in May ’20 over May ’19 to US $ 723.68 million. Volumes too fell by 54 per cent on Y-o-Y basis to 393.31 million SME.
Comparing China’s May shipment with April (which was US $ 621 million), the country got a surge of 16.53 per cent and this indicates China is gradually increasing its share in the US market as the pandemic situation subsides.
China stayed ahead of Vietnam which took a solid dent in May ’20 and dropped by 41 per cent on yearly basis in value to ship US $ 624.51 million worth of garments to the USA. Volume-wise, Vietnam plunged by 52 per cent in May ’20 over May ’19.
Vietnam’s export to the USA valued US $ 805.34 million in April ’20 and the monthly decline of 22.45 per cent was registered by the country in its exports done in May this year.
Bangladesh’s performance was worst ever in the US market, as its apparel exports to its biggest destination declined on Y-o-Y basis by 68 per cent in values (US $ 168.45 million) and 66 per cent in volumes (60 million SME).
Bangladesh too tumbled massively on the monthly basis, as its exports reduced by 57.88 per cent in May ’20 over April ’20.
As far as India is concerned, its performance remained the worst among the top exporting destinations. The country shrunk by 84 per cent on yearly basis to ship apparels worth US $ 62.98 million and volumes decreased by 82 per cent to just 19.64 million SME.
