The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Alhaji Abdullahi Dikko, recently announced in Lagos that there would no longer be a ban on import of certain product categories to Nigeria. The categories announced included textiles. The importers of these goods will have to pay a duty of 35 per cent as agreed by Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) member countries as well as the Import Adjustment Tax (IAT).
The ban was put to protect the local industries involved in the manufacturing of these goods. A promise of clearing the complete import prohibition list by 2020 has also been made.
