Officina+39, an Italian textile chemical company, has developed a sustainable dyestuff range, Recycrom, using recycled used clothes, fibrous material, and textile scraps.
With sustainability being one of the main concerns of apparel industry, the company has used a sophisticated process to convert the textile scraps into coloured powder. This dyestuff, available in different colours, can be used for fashionable dyeing, printing, and colouring.
The fine coloured powered are made up of natural chemicals and can be used as a pigment dye for fabric and garments made of cotton, wool, nylon or any other natural and most artificial fibres or blends.
The application of these dyes can be done using various methods such as exhaustive dyeing, printing, and spray; coating will be later introduced to this method as it is still under development.
Moreover, these dyes can be easily filtered from the water as they are applied as suspension rather than as a chemical solution like the other dyes. This again helps to reduce both cost and environmental impact.
Furthermore, the development will also help to tackle the textile waste being generated by the apparel manufacturers. This can be taken as an opportunity by the brands and retailers to collaborate with the inventors and convert their scraps and textile waste into custom dyes.
Recycrom was developed in 2016 and has bagged many awards, including the KeyhouseHightex Award at Munich Fabric Start 2017. Also, the development has been applied to the two capsule collections by Italian high-street retailers OVS. As a part of its expansion plan the company is now set for mass volume and is planning to collaborate with many brands and retailers
