Amazon.com exceeded fourth-quarter sales projections thanks to new generative AI capabilities in its cloud and retail businesses that drove strong growth over the important Christmas season.
Amazon’s roster of high-spending business clients has provided it with consistent growth in an unpredictable economy, but its status as the world’s largest cloud provider is being challenged by competitor Microsoft.
Andy Jassy, AWS CEO emphasised the company’s “continued long-term focus on customers and feature delivery,” emphasising plans to integrate generative AI into several of its offerings. The additional features “are starting to be reflected in our overall results.”
He also stated that generative AI revenue was still relatively tiny, but that he expected the technology to generate tens of billions of dollars in revenue over the next several years. Almost every consumer company Amazon ran already had or will have generative AI services.
Amazon Web Services (AWS) reported US $ 24.2 billion in sales in the fourth quarter, which was broadly in line with analyst estimates.
To boost its cloud business and respond to Microsoft’s anticipated US $ 10 billion investment in ChatGPT parent OpenAI, Amazon is investing up to US $ 4 billion in chatbot creator Anthropic.
However, they fell well short of Microsoft’s Intelligent Cloud business’s December-quarter profit of 48.2 per cent, which includes its Azure service. Google Cloud’s margin was 9.4 per cent.
Amazon has developed fulfillment centers closer to customers, making package delivery more cost-effective and timely. Last year, during the important Black Friday and Cyber Monday holiday shopping periods, buyers globally purchased almost 1 billion items from Amazon.
Ad revenue increased 27 per cent to US $ 14.65 billion in the fourth quarter, about in line with expectations.
Amazon’s fourth-quarter revenue increased 14 per cent to US $ 170 billion, above analysts’ average forecast of US $ 166.21 billion, according to LSEG data.
The business expects current-quarter revenue of US $ 138 billion to US $ 143.5 billion. Analysts surveyed by LSEG predict US $ 142.13 billion.
