Louis Vuitton has announced an extension of Nicolas Ghesquière’s contract as the artistic director of womenswear for another five years.
Ghesquière was first appointed as creative director in 2013, replacing Marc Jacobs. Over the years, he has risen to acclaim as one of the most celebrated designers in the industry, known for his ability to draw references and silhouettes from the past while keeping an eye on contemporary inspiration. His continued tenure as the creative director is remarkable in contemporary fashion when many creative directors have barely lasted three years.
In a release, the 52-year-old expressed his gratitude, stating, “It is a true honour to continue writing the story of Louis Vuitton. We began the first chapter ten years ago, defining a new identity based on extraordinary heritage and a constant focus on innovation. In particular, I have had the privilege to harness the talent and expertise of the Maison and its teams to develop new codes.”
Nicolas Ghesquière showcased his latest Louis Vuitton collection at a building on Champs Elysées, which is set to house a new Vuitton superstore and its first hotel.
Additionally, WWD reported that Ghesquière was instrumental in the high-end label reaching Us $ 20 billion in sales annually as of last year.
Pietro Beccari, Louis Vuitton’s chairman and CEO, said, “I am immensely proud to collaborate with Nicolas Ghesquière, a true creative genius. His redefinition of the Women’s Universe at Louis Vuitton, including a sharp new ready-to-wear silhouette, iconic models of leather goods and shoes, and numerous astounding destination shows, has contributed in no uncertain terms to the Maison’s success over the past decade. I am very much looking forward to continuing to pave the future of Louis Vuitton together.”
Furthermore, Vuitton’s menswear will continue to be headed by Pharrell Williams, who debuted his first collection on Pont Neuf last June.
