Tirupur’s textile industry, a significant player in India’s export market, has shown remarkable growth this year. According to the Tirupur Exporters’ Association (TEA), exports in April 2024 reached US $ 294 million, up from US $ 290 million in April 2023. May 2024 saw an even more significant increase, with exports rising to US $ 360 million compared to US $ 323 million in the same month last year.
Tirupur now contributes 90 per cent of India’s cotton knitwear exports and 55 per cent of all knitwear exports. Despite a 3.8 per cent dip in January, subsequent months recorded increases in export figures: 6.4 per cent in February and 5.6 per cent in March year-over-year.
The region has also seen improvements in its labour situation. Pre-election, there was a 40 per cent shortage of migrant workers, which has now reduced to 10 per cent. Tirupur employs 600,000 local workers and 200,000 migrants. The surge in orders has boosted activities across the entire textile cluster, including knitting, dyeing, bleaching, fabric printing, garments, embroidery, compacting, calendaring, and other ancillary units.
