
Indian textile industry has sought a uniform duty of 5 per cent under the Goods and Services Tax (GST), expected to be executed from July this year. GST is seen as the most comprehensive tax reform the country has witnessed since Independence.Retailers in the country are also looking for early implementation of Goods and Services Tax (GST).

It is pertinent to mention here that Special Packages were also announced by the Indian Government last year for the apparel sector and made-ups (an article manufactured and /or stitched from any type of cloth, other than a garment). Now the industry people are hoping a Special Package for the powerloom sector as well. The decentralized powerloom sector, which has a share of nearly 55 per cent in the total cloth produced in the country, plays a very vital role in the employment generation as well as overall availability of cloth in the country.
