A seven-member delegation of senior parliamentarians from the European Union (EU) visited India to discuss trade talks about to restart, pending trade issues and India’s take on the EU-Indo-Pacific strategy.
The delegation was led by trade committee chair Bernd Lange (S&D, DE).
On the last day of their tour, Shahi Exports, India’s number one apparel exporter, hosted the delegation.
The delegation, along with the senior team of H&M, also visited the company’s Faridabad factory. Anant Ahuja, GD Giri and other senior officials of the company shared insights about the apparel industry’s contribution to job creation and economic development.
The delegation engaged with Shahi Exports’ perspective on deepening and facilitating trade and investment ties between the EU and India.
Prior to this, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and senior officials from various ministries also met the delegation and discussed areas of common interest, including the India-EU trade agreement.
It is worth highlighting here that India and the 27-nation EU will restart negotiations for their long-pending free trade agreement from June. India’s textile products attract about 9-10 per cent customs duty in the EU and about 8-9 per cent in the UK.
