Bangladesh’s apparel manufacturing sector employs around 4.4 million workers and Eid is biggest festival for them. Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) have asked its members to complete the payments by July 10 and festival allowances by July 15 to avoid any untoward incident before the Eid festival. Association and the industrial police have made a list of 45 factories in Dhaka and 29 in Chittagong, which may fail to clear the payments in time due to a cash crunch. Association’s crisis management team is also monitoring the situation so that the workers are paid properly and timely. As last time there were some issues in some factories regarding the same, association is observing caution this year. Shahidullah Azim, VP, BGMEA said, “Association’s crisis management team is also monitoring the situation so that the workers are paid properly and timely. Eight regional committees in Dhaka, Savar, Ashulia, Narayanganj and Gazipur have been assigned to monitor the payment situation.”
