
Santosh Kumar Gangwar (Minister of State for Ministry of Textiles has revealed the details of the much-awaited textile vision policy. Gangwar made a reference to National Manufacturing Competitiveness Council (NMCC) – the textile ministry’s expert committee headed by Ajay Shankar, Member Secretary of the Council. The council was formulated for reviewing the Textile Policy 2000. The Textile Minister updates that the committee has reviewed the policy and submitted a draft vision, strategy and action plan. He further informs that the draft proposal put forth a plan for job creation of about 35 million, export of US$185 billion (both textiles and apparels), domestic production worth US $350 billion and investment of US$200 billion by 2024-25.

Reflecting on the progress achieved, Gangwar said, “Based on this, the ministry has initiated consultation with various stakeholders—including industry associations and export promotion councils—and started a study of textile policies of various state governments. The draft is under process for consideration by the committee of secretaries.”
Gangwar further identifies the potential impact of FTAs, including the TPP, on exports. The proposal regarding FTAs with major textile and apparel markets like the EU, the US, CIS countries, South Africa and Turkey has been referred to the ministry of commerce by Gangwar.
