
The Meghalaya Government has expressed keen interest in strengthening economic and trade relations with Bangladesh, aiming to promote the mutual benefits of their respective populations.
This was underlined by the Chief Minister of Meghalaya Conrad Sangma during a meeting at his office (in Meghalaya) recently during which he conveyed his interest in enhancing bilateral relations with Bangladesh even as he welcomed the Bangladesh High Commissioner to India, Mustafizur Rahman, during his visit to the North-eastern state.
According to sources from the Bangladesh High Commission, the Meghalaya Chief Minister briefed the Bangladeshi envoy about the potential opportunities and prospects for expanding trade and commerce between Bangladesh and Meghalaya.
Emphasising the current Bangladesh Government’s eagerness to strengthen trade relations with the north-eastern state region of India, Conrad highlighted that investors from Meghalaya have significant opportunities to invest in various sectors in Bangladesh.
The High Commissioner drew the Meghalaya Chief Minister’s attention to the urgent reopening of closed land customs stations in the border areas.
It may be mentioned here strengthening the relations between Meghalaya and Bangladesh can benefit both the north-eastern part of India, which has rising demand for apparel as well as Bangladesh in terms of easier and faster raw material supply from India.
Mustafizur had earlier held a meeting with the Industries and Trade Fair Association of Assam.
During this official trip, the High Commissioner is expected to visit multiple land customs stations along the border as well as meet business communities and trade representatives in Dawki (Meghalaya) and Tamabil (Bangladesh).
