The New Mooring Container Terminal (NCT), the largest container handling facility under the Chittagong Port Authority, recorded its highest-ever monthly container throughput in May, marking a significant operational milestone for Bangladesh’s principal seaport.
According to port authorities, the terminal handled 126,496 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) during the month, surpassing the previous record of 125,533 TEUs set in October 2025.
The terminal is currently operated by Chittagong Dry Dock Limited (CDDL) under the supervision of the Chittagong Port Authority and the management of the Bangladesh Navy.
During May, NCT processed an average of 4,081 TEUs per day. Of the total volume handled, 59,851 TEUs comprised import containers, while 66,645 TEUs were export containers, reflecting robust activity in both inbound and outbound trade.
Chief Personnel Officer of Chittagong Port, Md Nasir Uddin said that terminal operations had accelerated since CDDL assumed management responsibilities on 7 July 2025. He attributed the improved performance to enhanced coordination across vessel berthing points, delivery points, appraisal points, C&F sheds, and terminal entry and exit gates, which had increased the efficiency of container loading and unloading operations.
NCT is the largest terminal at Chittagong Port, extending nearly one kilometre in length and capable of accommodating up to five vessels simultaneously. The facility comprises four jetties and handles almost half of the port’s total container traffic.
The terminal is equipped with advanced yard infrastructure and 14 gantry cranes owned by the port authority, along with a range of supporting equipment for container handling, movement and storage.
Container operations at Chittagong Port are also conducted through the Chittagong Container Terminal (CCT) and the General Cargo Berth (GCB). Meanwhile, the Patenga Container Terminal (PCT) is operated by Red Sea Gateway Terminal.
In 2025, the port’s three container terminals collectively handled 3.41 million TEUs, underscoring the growing importance of Bangladesh’s maritime trade infrastructure.
Port officials stated that the record achievement was the result of the combined efforts, professionalism and coordination of the leadership, officers and employees of both the Chittagong Port Authority and CDDL.
They noted that the improved performance would further enhance the capacity of the country’s main seaport, facilitate foreign trade and contribute positively to national economic growth.
