Accused of human right violation, India’s leading apparel manufacturer Page Industries will have to pass through one more investigation.
After the UK-based swimwear brand Speedo International, now Worldwide Responsible Accredited Production (WRAP) is also investigating the matter.
Page Industries is the exclusive licensee for Speedo and innerwear maker Jockey International in India.
The issue rose last month following a report of possible human rights violations by Page Industries, which Norway’s wealth fund dropped from its portfolio.
The fund’s decision was based on its Council on Ethics’ findings which flagged these concerns and also said that Page Industries had violated national regulations on issues such as fire safety.
The Norway’s fund’s ethics council report reads “the abuses were found in one of Page’s factories in the southern city of Bengaluru, describing it as ‘a pattern of behaviour’. Page “does little” to prevent the abuse of labour rights in its operations, failed to provide information on the findings and did not permit an inspection of the factory.”
As per a report of Reuters, the WRAP spokesperson said, “Should the facility refuse to remediate such non-compliances or should the remediation efforts be insufficient, WRAP will revoke the facility’s certification. In case any non-compliance noted proves to be so egregious as to leave no room for remediation, WRAP reserves the right to immediately suspend the facility’s certificate.”
Jockey, US-based well-known intimatewear brand is also a WRAP founding member. The brand has said that it would ‘closely monitor’ the outcome of an internal evaluation of the allegations being carried out by Page Industries.
Having around 20,000 workers and revenue of around US $ 400 million, Page Industries didn’t respond to Apparel Resources’ mail in this regard.
