
Due to a lack of work orders, Dird Washing Co. Ltd., has laid off about 300 employees, becoming the fourth department of parent company to close operations this year.
Media reports maintained this adding, recently the Savar’s Rajfulbaria Factory authorities posted the layoff notice signed on 19th October at the door of the factory.
Due to a lack of orders, the dismissal was declared under the Bangladesh Labor Act 2006, the statement said.
“The issue of layoffs will be resolved after discussions with workers.” “We have announced redundancies due to zero orders,” Uzzwal Hayder, head of human resources at Dird Group, told media in a WhatsApp message, adding “Management has been very proactive about making sure employees are paid.”
The wash unit employs about 300 workers, who reportedly claimed they learned of the layoffs when they reported for work.
Meanwhile, a mid-level employee reportedly said that for mid-level employees, the period of salary arrears ranges from five to 11 months, while many other employees only received one month’s salary.

Rafiqul Islam Sujan, president of Bangladesh Garments and Shilpa Shromik Federation, on his part, said workers have lost their jobs due to retrenchment.
He called on factories to reopen as soon as possible.
Earlier this year, two of the Dird Group’s factories, Dird Garments Ltd and Dipta Garments Ltd, were closed.
On 20th September, another unit of the group, Dipta Apparels Ltd., closed.
Talking about the layoffs, Md Shahidullah Azim, vice president of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association, said that the factory had been struggling for the past few months with lack of orders and finally the management announced the layoffs.
