German fashion house Hugo Boss recently received the Corporate Consciousness Award from the Human Society of the United States (HSUS) in recognition of its commitment to humane alternatives and sustainable business strategies.
In the acceptance speech, Ingo Wilts, Chief Brand Officer, Hugo Boss stated, “Hugo Boss has always been at the forefront, exploring new ideas and technologies and finding forward-thinking solutions for our industry. With our decision to go fur-free, we’ve anchored animal welfare as a fixture within our product sustainability programme.”

The award recognizes in particular the decision taken by Hugo Boss, a fashion industry leader in the luxury market, in regard to making animal welfare and innovation key principles of corporate responsibility.
On top of rejecting real animal fur, exotic leather and angora, the company has taken a stand against some of the most egregious animal husbandry practices in fashion. Hugo Boss also rejects any animal testing. To meet customer demand, the forward-thinking company uses humane alternatives such as ‘friendly fur’ and ‘friendly leather’ made without animals. Replacing cruelty with sustainable innovations is the future of the fashion industry, and Hugo Boss hopes to inspire the present generation and especially the next generation with a new kind of luxury.
In 2016, Hugo Boss took the decision to exclude all farmed fur from its collections and instead focus on innovation and alternative materials. Last year, Hugo Boss had already decided to stop the production and use of protected species hides and angora. The company also focused on using animal-friendly techniques for obtaining products as well as using sustainable strategies.
For many years, Hugo Boss has been cooperating with animal protection and consumer groups such as Peta and HSUS with the goal of advancing animal rights. Boasting over 10 million members, HSUS is the world’s largest animal welfare organization.
