Close on the heels of Bangladesh’s Industrial Police identifying 674 industrial units, including 435 garment and textile units across the country as vulnerable to labour unrest over non-payment of wages and festival allowances ahead of Eid, the crisis management core committee on Thursday decided to complete the disbursement of Eid bonus and salary of the month of May to the garment workers by 30 May and 2 June, respectively.

A decision in this regard was taken at a meeting of the core committee chaired by State Minister for Labour and Employment Monnujan Sufian.

In the meeting, both the factory owners and Government have reportedly agreed that the salary of at least 20 days of the month of May will be paid by 2 June and festival bonus by 30 May so that the workers can go to their villages for celebrations.

It may mentioned here that in an earlier meeting held at the Home Ministry on Sunday, the Industrial Police had tabled a list of around 416 readymade garment factories across Bangladesh that were marked as volatile.

Of the 416 units, 327 are said to be members of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) while 89 are members of the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA).
