Vietnam, which was in the league of the Top 10 apparel exporters to the European Union in 2015, recently saw its neighbour Cambodia overshadowing its performance.
As per the Vietnam Textile and Apparel Association (VITAS) report that was submitted on Tuesday last week, Vietnam ranked sixth in the apparel export market share, which, however, figures below Cambodia, much to the surprise of experts.
In the European Union, China leads the league with 36.9 per cent. It is followed by Bangladesh with 16.89 per cent, Turkey with 11.62, India with 6.33, Cambodia with 3.64, and Vietnam with 3.45 per cent respectively, the report stated. In spite of the 5.01 per cent rise in export turnover and a 3.21 per cent rise in total goods exported in comparison with 2014, Vietnam’s shipments occupied only 3.45 per cent of the textile market share in EU last year. The average unit price of Cambodian garments and textiles was seen to be lower than that of 2014, Cambodia’s market share was 3.64 per cent in the EU, about 0.19 per cent higher than Vietnam’s.
In 2015, the EU imported US$3.11 billion worth of apparel from Vietnam, while its apparel imports from Cambodia accounted for US$3.27 billion.
In January-February this year, the total garment and textile export turnover from Vietnam topped $3.6 billion, which is 12.4 per cent higher than the same period in 2015.
