Biswa Bangla, the textile and handicrafts company backed by the West Bengal Government, will open five new stores in this FY, eyeing expansion in other areas of the country.
The textile company has been performing extremely well in its home state and fetched a business of Rs 20 crore (approx US $ 3 million) in the financial year 2017-18 with 20 per cent yearly growth.
Reportedly, the brand is targeting Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Jaipur and Varanasi, where it plans to open new outlets.
Rajiva Sinha, Secretary, Department of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises was quoted as saying by a leading media house that “Biswa Bangla is about dedicated products that are focused on bringing back dying arts from the brink, we are not looking at introducing our products in bulk in the market, because we work on the entire value chain.”
The Kolkata-based textile company currently operates eight stores in Delhi and Kolkata retailing more than 10,000 products under its brand name in the price bracket that starts from Rs 100 and goes up to Rs 3 lakh (Around US $ 4,500).
Notably, Biswa Bangla Marketing Corporation was established four years back by the Government of West Bengal under the Department of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).
Furthermore, Biswa Bangla will be coming up with fresh products with Nettle fibre and bamboo yarns that will be used to make clothes.
