Flipkart grabbed the top slot at the end of the first week of India’s largest sale season.
According to RedSeer Consulting, one of the largest management consulting companies in India, Walmart-owned Flipkart has posted remarkable sales in the first week of the ongoing festive sale season – so much so that it is estimated to have clocked in a little over double the sales of its closest rival Amazon!
When combined together, Flipkart and Amazon’s sales accounted for over 90 per cent of the e-commerce industry’s gross sales of nearly Rs. 29,000 crore during 16 to 21 October, RedSeer reported; this show 55 per cent year-on-year growth in sales during the first week of the festive period this year.
“The awareness of people regarding the sales and the motivation to shop online were perhaps the highest ever, and we think potentially Flipkart was more able to penetrate the Tier-2 markets,” said Mrigank Gutgutia, Director, RedSeer.
RedSeer further highlighted in its report that though fashion sales fell by 14 per cent this year as against 17 per cent last year, the segment has potential to pick up as Diwali approaches – a festive time when consumers usually buy new clothes.
Both Flipkart and Amazon have not made any public statements on their festive sales yet.
