The Uttar Pradesh government has announced a hike in minimum wages across worker categories following recent unrest in Noida, with the revised rates to be implemented retrospectively from 1st April, officials confirmed on Tuesday.
Gautam Buddh Nagar District Magistrate Medha Roopam stated that the wage increase had been carried out by a high-powered committee. She further noted that the decision had received approval from the Chief Minister.
According to an official statement, unskilled workers in Gautam Buddh Nagar and Ghaziabad will now receive Rs. 13,690 (US $147.10) per month, up from Rs. 11,313 (US $121.56). Semi-skilled workers will earn Rs. 15,059 (US $161.81), while skilled workers will receive Rs. 16,868 (US $181.25).
In other municipal corporation areas, the revised monthly wages have been fixed at Rs. 13,006 (US $139.75) for unskilled workers, Rs. 14,306 (US $153.72) for semi-skilled workers, and Rs. 16,025 (US $172.19) for skilled workers.
For the remaining districts, unskilled workers will receive Rs. 12,356 (US $132.77) per month, semi-skilled workers Rs. 13,591 (US $146.04), and skilled workers Rs. 15,224 (US $163.59).
The wage revision comes in the wake of large-scale protests by factory workers in Noida on Monday, during which thousands demanded higher wages and improved working conditions. The demonstrations turned violent in certain parts of the district, prompting the government to constitute a committee to address the situation and initiate dialogue with both workers and employers.
