The potential manufacturing sector in the North East States of India is grabbing eyeballs now for all right reasons. The region has immense natural resources, inexpensive and hardworking labour force, well-developed transportation and cross border connection with the South East Asian countries.
Realising the potential in Tripura’s manufacturing sector, the state’s Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb has come forward and invited Bangladeshi garment manufacturers to invest in the state.
Deb commented, “Bangladesh is a giant in the garment industry. I want to ask the business tycoons to come and set up their manufacturing units in Sabroom, only 72 kilometres away from Chittagong port. We are setting up a logistic hub, Special Economic Zone where the Bangladeshi investors can get subsidies.”
According to Deb, if the manufactured garments are exported, the factories have to pay custom duties. “However, if a garment is made in Tripura, the Indian Government will offer subsidies to the manufacturing plants,” averred Deb, adding, “Both the Prime Ministers (India’s and Bangladesh’s) have taken the long-standing camaraderie between India and Bangladesh to new heights. Whenever I sought Bangladesh PM’s help for any project, she did not refuse. She gave everything to Tripura.”
It’s worth noting here that the projects worth several thousand crores are already in the implementing stage in Tripura and Bangladesh could get benefits out of it if it goes for investing in the state.
“Bangladesh is an exporter of cement and steel. In Tripura, infrastructure development projects worth Rs. 3,500 crore are under progress including railways. Bangladesh can also take advantage of it. When the North East will operate its trade through Chittagong port, Bangladesh shall also see a boost in the economy,” concluded Deb.
Team Apparel Resources has consistently been putting its focus on educating the industry about the emerging industrial opportunities in the North East Region (NER), particularly in the garment industry. Our two recent articles endorse the same wherein we talked about everything related to why North East should be seen as a strong industrial hub! One can read both articles here –
North East India: A Potential Industrial Hub
North-East states have all the right qualities to become prospective garment manufacturing hubs…
In words of Deepak Mohindra, Chairman, Apparel Resources, “North East is a great place to start a garment factory. It has best of the required Government push and the manpower. But, still for a region or a hub to develop as a garmenting centre requires the accessory and fabric suppliers, it requires job workers such as embroiders and dyers etc., a whole lot of paraphernalia and above all BUYERS. Therefore, any plan to develop a garmenting region or a hub and making it a success requires a concerted effort to bring together all partners of the supply chain at one place.”
