
Japan’s apparel imports have continued surging on monthly note in September ’20 over August ’20. According to the latest data, Japan grew 12.23 per cent in September this year on M-o-M basis and its import valued at 266.25 billion yen (US $ 2.53 billion).
In August ’20, the apparel import value stood at 237.24 billion yen (US $ 2.25 billion).
However, as compared to September ’19, Japan was still down by 14.69 per cent in September ’20, recovering only 85.31 per cent from the levels of 2019.
In terms of weight, Japanese apparel import increased by 10.34 per cent in September ’20 over August ’20 but declined by 7.55 per cent as compared to September ’19.
Interestingly, the unit prices of the imported garments drastically reduced to 496 yen (US $ 4.73) per kg in September this year from 538.40 yen (US $ 5.13) per kg in the same month of 2019, which is over 8 per cent Y-o-Y decline.
Unit prices might have reduced on yearly basis but there is a clear surge of 1.64 per cent in unit prices between September and August months of 2020, which signals towards a surge in prices as market is getting recovered after COVID-19.
As far as cumulative period (Jan.-Sep. ’20) is concerned, Japan plummeted by 16.36 per cent in value terms to spend 1,910.70 billion yen (US $ 18.20 billion) to import 4.36 billion kg of garments, down by 11.68 per cent.
