
Indian government which has been taking every single step to popularise khadi nationally and globally, has reported increase in sales of khadi and village industries’ products in fiscal 2017-18, informed MSME Minister Giriraj Singh.
During the period under review, the khadi and village industries products witnessed total sales of Rs. 59,098 crore as compared to sales of Rs. 52,138 crore in 2016-17.
Not only sales, production of khadi products also zoomed from Rs. 42,631 crore in the last financial year to Rs. 48,013 crore this year.
“The considerable growth of khadi and village industries was witnessed during the last two years,” added Singh. The Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC), a statutory body in India, recently inked collaboration with Montenegro to globalise the concept of the natural fabric, which is a core property of Khadi. It is a zero-carbon footprint industry that patronises Indian artisans.
Around 80 lakh people are employed with Khadi industry in India. In addition to Centre, state government and other government organisations have also initiated steps to popularise khadi.
The Rajasthan Khadi and Village Industries Board (RKVIB) recently proposed to make khadi uniform mandatory for at least 50,000 employees deployed at 6,500 operational petrol pumps in Rajasthan.
Similarly, the Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC) has also made khadi uniform mandatory for its 4,000 sanitation workers.
