
The Indian Ministry of Textiles is yet to finalise date to announce the proposed National Textiles Policy which has been under discussions for several years, stated Textiles Minister Smriti Irani.
“The consultations with various expert groups and industry representatives to address various challenges being faced by the sector are underway to give final shape to the policy,” Irani was quoted as saying.
“Growth possibilities for natural fibre are also being identified,”added she while addressing a press conference in Delhi.
The proposed policy is aimed to create a target of achieving $300 billion textile exports by 2024-25, and creating around 35 million new jobs.
She emphasized on importance of regular redressal of needs of the textile industry.
Further, she also informed that second phase of pan India Hastkala Shivirs are slated to be held from February 19 -24. North East states will be given special focus. She urged parliamentarians to take part in such camps to cheer weavers.
At least 1.2 lakh weavers and artisans across the country reaped benefit from Hastkala Sahyog Shivirs, a 10-day long pan India handloom and handicraft camps, organised from October 7 last year.
“The textile ministry is focused to develop and modernize the textile sector in the North-Eastern States,” concluded she.
According to National Handloom Census 2009-10, the North-East states are home to16.47 lakh handlooms weavers (69.28 per cent) of total 23.77 lakh weavers in the country.

Irani also elaborated about initiatives and success of her ministry in supporting the industry.
