TRI3D – a start-up incubated by IIT Madras in collaboration with NASSCOM – has been experiencing significant surge in queries placed for its software ‘Fab3D’ that converts flat images of Indian traditional garments, saree in particular, into photorealistic 3D images for the use on e-commerce websites.
After lockdown has been lifted in India, a lot of small as well as big clothing brands are opting for e-commerce operations and looking to integrate relevant technologies to save cost.
According to the developers, Fab3D has been assisting Indian SMEs to sail through economic crises caused by COVID-19 pandemic and eliminating the need for expensive photo-shoots for online commerce.
As claimed by TRI3D, over 80 companies have opted for this software in past couple of months, while the total number of active customers is over 150, as of October end.
“With our apparel visualisation technology, we have found a way to provide economical substitute for expensive traditional model photoshoots. The software is convenient for small-scale brands as well as the boutique designers and weavers who can’t afford the cost of photoshoots. We also enable them to remain competitive in this digital era and re-invent themselves to fight business challenges created by pandemic,” commented Krishna Sumanth Alwala, Co-founder of TRI3D who is also an IIT Madras alumnus.
As far as technology behind the process is concerned, a picture of a saree is taken first which automatically drapes onto a model or mannequin with unchallenged realism using Fab3D software.
In words of Nitish Reddy Parvatham, Co-founder, TRI3D, he said that the photo could also be one of unstitched dress materials and Fab3D software then not only virtually ‘stitches’ the fabric but also ‘visualises’ it as a finished garment draped onto a chosen model in a number of poses.
Not just retailers, the software is being used currently by wholesalers, manufacturers, B2B distributors as well as the handloom weavers across India and in some other countries such as Sri Lanka and UAE.
